Universe City Readers Theatre presents Aristophanes' "Peace," Sunday, April 1 at 2:00 p.m. in the Strawberry Gallery, Universe City at 2556 Washington Blvd. in Ogden. The production is recommended for mature audiences only and contains mature themes and language.
"Peace" was written when War (Peloponnesian) had already lasted ten years. The leading motive is the same as in many of Aristophanes' plays--the intense desire of the less excitable and more moderate-minded citizens for relief from the miseries of war. Also typical is his satirical treatment of government officials, war leaders and easily misled citizens. The rustic patriot, Trygaeus, travels to Olympus to question the gods about the state of the world. His vehicle is a dung beetle he has trained for this purpose. He finds Olympus deserted by all but the demon, War, who is pounding the Greeks states in a mortar. Peace has been imprisoned in a pit. Trygaeus calls the different states of Hellas to rescue her and
bring her back to Earth.
The cast includes Luckey Heath as Trygaeus and Dr. Larry Dooley (WSU Theatre) as War. The remaining cast members will take several parts and will also be included as The Chorus. They include WSU theatre majors Tyson Baker and Linton Dean, Dr. Linda Eaton (Anthropology), Dr. Robert Fudge (Philosophy), Caril Jennings (Performing Arts) and Dr. Kathryn MacKay (History). Seating limited to 45.
